About this route
A south-side climb through forest, a boulder field and open ledges to one of southern New Hampshire’s classic summit viewpoints.
The Boulder Loop climbs Mount Major from the south, beginning on a broad woods road before the orange blazes lead into rougher terrain. A boulder field and a steep, gravelly pitch provide the route’s most demanding stretch; above them, the grade eases through oak and pine before the trail reaches increasingly open ledges and the summit.
The approved out-and-back line measures 3.2 miles with about 1,129 feet of gain, closely matching the land manager’s published route. The exposed upper ledges deserve extra care when wet or icy. At the top, the remains of Mr. Phippen’s stone hut mark the 1,786-foot summit and a broad southern New Hampshire view.
